Better Judgement. More Efficiency. Better Schools.
Meet James Ferreira
I am a lifelong resident of Yuba City, and a Sutter High School graduate, representing four generations of local family history. I have dedicated my career to education, serving as teacher, department chair, assistant principal, and principal.
I have also held district leadership roles, including serving as school superintendent and as a trustee on the Yuba City Unified School Board.
I believe that strong schools are the foundation of a strong community and I am committed to supporting students, teachers, and families throughout Sutter County while reducing unnecessary bureaucracy and improving efficiency.
Less Bureaucracy
Better Decisions
Greater Efficiency
Stronger Schools
Why I'm Running
After more than 40 years in education, I've seen what works—and what doesn't. I've served as a teacher, principal, and superintendent, and I've worked closely with students, families, and staff at every level.
Too often, unnecessary bureaucracy and political ambition stand in the way of students, families, teachers, and schools.
That experience has shown me that when schools focus on students, they succeed—and when they get buried in bureaucracy, they struggle.
Our schools should be focused on teaching, learning, and supporting students—not navigating red tape.
I've seen firsthand—and experienced—how superintendents and principals are pressured and second-guessed by a bureaucratic system that offers little explanation beyond, "Because I told you so."
Decisions are made that prioritize systems over people, and the result is frustration, inefficiency, and lost opportunities for our students. Administrators should be supported in carrying out the mission and vision of each school and district. Educators should be empowered to do their jobs, and families should feel confident that the system is working for them, not against them.
I'm running to bring better judgment, greater efficiency, and stronger schools to Sutter County, not bigger bureaucracy. I believe we can refocus on what truly matters: students, classrooms, and results.
My Priorities
1. Focus on Students, Not Bureaucracy
Schools exist to serve students, not systems. I will reduce unnecessary bureaucracy so administrators can focus on their school’s mission and vision, educators can focus on teaching, and students can focus on success.
2. Support Teachers and Local Leadership
Teachers and site administrators know their students and schools best. I will support their professional judgment and ensure that the relationship between the Superintendent’s Office and Sutter County schools is one of respect, collaboration, and support rather than top-down enforcement. I will make sure that our school communities have the tools and flexibility they need to achieve their goals and promote student success.
3. Improve Efficiency and Accountability
Taxpayer dollars should be used wisely and transparently. I will prioritize efficient operations, reduce waste, and ensure decisions are made with due diligence, community input, transparency, and accountability. The role of the superintendent is to support schools and strengthen community relationships—not to compete with or replace existing educational opportunities.
4. Strengthen Communication with Families
Sutter County families deserve a system that is transparent, accountable, and responsive. I will ensure that schools and districts have the support they need to build strong relationships with the communities they serve.
5. Keep the Focus on Results
Every decision should come back to one question: Is this helping students learn and succeed? I will keep the focus on results—providing what’s needed, eliminating what isn’t, and delivering better judgment, greater efficiency, and stronger schools for Sutter County.
Together, we can build schools that are focused, efficient, and truly centered on students—not systems.
